Mission & Vision
Salem Art Works (SAW) is a contemporary art center and sculpture park located on a 119-acre former dairy farm in rural Washington County, New York. Founded in 2005 by artist Anthony Cafritz, SAW’s mission is to support both emerging and established artists in all artistic media in the creation of new and progressive work, as well as promote the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art within the region. At the core of SAW’s philosophy is the belief that inspired new works are created in an open and supportive environment encouraging interaction among artists and disciples. Based upon this tenet, SAW offers opportunities in four focal areas: cultural events, exhibitions, educational workshops, and artist programs.
Overview
SAW offers both subsidized and self-funded artist residencies throughout the year for artists working in any medium or discipline, as well as community and youth programming and events. All facilities and artist studios are located on the SAW campus in repurposed dairy barns and houses. SAW’s resources are available for use by all artists, regardless of discipline. Hands-on experience in blacksmithing, ceramics, glassblowing, metal casting, welding, screenprinting, and painting is offered (for a fee) to resident artists and the public as workshops, classes, or one-on-one instruction.
